Sclerotheraphy is a minimally invasive procedure used for the treatment of spider veins, which are smaller, dilated and similar to varicose veins.Varicose veins are large abnormal veins that are swollen, twisted and primarily found in the legs. Larger varicose veins, such as the saphenous vein which extends from the groin and inside of the thigh into the inner calf, can effectively be treated by endovenous ablation, a nonsurgical treatment that is successful at closing the abnormal target vein most of the time. Spider veins may persist after the endovenous ablation and require additional treatment of sclerotherapy.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is an injection therapy where a tiny needle is used to inject the veins with medication that irritates the lining of the vein.
The vascular specialist will begin by cleaning and sterilizing the treatment area and then use a very fine needle to inject a salt-based solution into the affected vein(s). This solution irritates the lining of the vein, which makes it swell and close, blocking blood flow. Once the solution has been delivered, the needle is removed and pressure as well as a compression pad is applied to treated area. Over a short time, the treated vein closes in response to the irritation and is reabsorbed by the body.
You can have numerous injections to treat different veins during the same procedure. After some time, the treated veins are reabsorbed by the body and eventually will fade and disappear.
Who is a Candidate for Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy can be a highly effective treatment for treating small varicose veins or spider veins. Frequent treatments are not uncommon as spider veins can reoccur but in a different area. If you are suffering from smaller varicose veins that are unsightly or causing you to experience uncomfortable symptoms then you may be a candidate for sclerotherapy. Ongoing treatments can be recommended for maintenance.
