James Carlisle, MD FSIR

James G. Carlisle graduated from the University of Michigan, where he completed his degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology with High Distinction. He attended medical school at the University of Michigan and was chosen by his peers to be the their representative at Commencement and give the Commencement address. He completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan and was chosen to be the Chief Resident.

He was selected to the prestigious Interventional Radiology fellowship at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA with Gordon McLean, MD, one of the most influential leaders in the field of IR. He is board certified in Diagnostic Radiology with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Vascular and Interventional Radiology from the American Board of Radiology.

After a brief period of time with a small private group in Ohio, he transitioned to Akron, OH where he joined a busy practice and became an Associate Professor in the Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Medicine.

He and his family moved to Salt Lake City in 2004 and he joined the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute as an Assistant Professor and the Section Chief of Interventional Radiology and fellowship program director. He was also the Director of the Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Center of Excellence. There he developed and led the establishment of the first Interventional Oncology clinical team in the Intermountain West and the first intravascular brachytherapy (Y90) treatment center for the treatment of primary liver tumors and colorectal cancer and other metastases to the liver. He performed the first Diomed laser ablation of the greater saphenous vein in Utah. He was named on various grants and peer-reviewed publications and enjoyed teaching medical students and residents and fellows.

His dedicated efforts in biomedical research and clinical trials began in 2008 when he was brought to the Huntsman Cancer Institute and became the primary investigator on a clinical trial investigating stage 1A lung cancer. Having since joined Utah Imaging Physician Specialists and the Mountainstar Hospitals in 2010 he has been recently the primary investigator on seven of the most important interventional oncology trials in the US investigating colon cancer, primary liver cancer and the treatment of painful spine metastases. He established the first oncology clinical trials team with the MountainStar system of hospitals. In 2012 he received the physician “Health Care Hero” award offered through Utah Business Magazine and the MountainStar Health System. He currently has five open clinical trials and is hoping to add a few more in both cancer and vascular disease.

Dr. Carlisle is a nationally recognized Interventional Oncologist specializing in minimally invasive image guided therapies for lung, kidney, colon, liver, GI and spine cancers and the treatment of arterial and venous vascular diseases. He continues to enjoy teaching physicians and is an active consultant to Dfine, BTG, Perseon Medical and Merit Medical Systems.
